Fixing the electronic ignition

When the twink was rebuilt, we installed a Pertronix FlameThrower distributor / electronic ignition. It caused us a lot of grief, working sporadically and eventually burning out, so we changed back to the points system. A few weeks ago, I ordered a Pertronix Ignitor III "upgrade" module with the hope that I could fix the distributor and tune the engine.

Removing the Ignitor module is straight-forward. Pop the distributor cap, cut the red & black wires, unscrew / remove the "horseshoe" plate and drill (carefully!) out the 3/32" (#1) rivets. Now you're ready to install the Ignitor III module.

I used 4-40 nuts & bolts with lock washers to secure everything - you will have to grind/file the heads down so the plate seats correctly. These will make servicing the distributor easier (the module MTBF is 25,000 miles).

Follow the same procedure, in reverse, to put the distributor back together.

Next, follow the instructions that come with the Ignitor III module to set the rev-limiter. I set mine to 7,600 RPM.

I also labelled the spark plug wires.
